On the afternoon of December 2, 2012, UNC played Penn State in the NCAA women's college soccer cup finals. The game was held in San Diego, California. Penn State was the first team from the Big Ten to make it to the finals and were determined to win a title. UNC, however, was looking to get their 21st championship win. UNC was also the only No. 2 seed in the tournament but they beat one No.1 seed team (BYU) to get into the tournament and beat two No. 1 seed teams to win the finals (Stanford and Penn State).
The game started with a goal made by Kealia Ohai who was set up by Santara Murray. She shook free from two defenders and had enough room to drill the ball into the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal from the 18.
Penn State was able to tie it up when Taylor Schram was able to get in behind a defender to receive a perfect through-ball. She then proceeded to make a chip shot that flew over the goalie's head and went into the right side of the goal.
48 seconds into the second half, Katie Bowen took a corner kick which was headed into the goal by Hanna Gardner to score UNC's second goal. It was Hanna Gardner's first goal of the season. UNC had a total of eight corner kicks while Penn State had only four.
Anson Dorrance, UNC head coach, made several substitutions in the offense line to keep everybody energized so that they could keep up the attacks. Penn State wasn't able to get a shot off because UNC's defense successfully shut down the offense.
In the 64th minute, Santara Murray scored her first goal in the season. She was able to volley it in after the ball rebounded off defender's legs when her teammates were trying to knock it in after a corner kick. That brought the score up to 3-1.
Renee Premji scored the team's 4th goal when Crystal Dunn barely kept it in on the end-line and lobbed the ball to Premji. Premji was able to volley it in easily from her great position in front of the goal. That was her fourth goal in the season.
The game ended in a sound win for UNC. The final score was 4-1 and Penn State fans everywhere were devastated.
I do not know much about soccer but it was nice to here about it.

This sounds like a very interesting game! I have always been fasinated by the sport of soccer. The game seemed intense and I could go right along with it. I don't know much about each of the teams, but I always feel bad for the losers. They work hard too! Anyway, it was a great post and you did well.
ReplyDeleteThis was a bit disappointing that Pen State didn't win. Even though Im not a Pen State fan It would of been really cool for them to win and being the only one form the Big Ten to make it to the finals. I think you should ethier add a picture or a video. Overall it was well done.
ReplyDeleteI thought that this was very interesting and I am looking forward to listening and I am glad that I will have this site to stay informed about the games. You did a very nice job with how you told about what happened in the minutes and stuff!
